Hey, I’ve Got an Easy Case. Can You Take a Quick Look for Free?
That’s a really common question. We understand money might be tight.
Sometimes non-attorneys who are facing legal trouble say “I’ve got an easy case. I just want you to look at it and tell me your opinion… If I hear what I want, then I will pay you.”
Of course, there’s no money offer on this phone call. They want you to look at it free and tell them — and then, if I have the right answer, they will hire me. Sorry, that’s not how business works.
I don’t do that. No good expert will do that.
You don’t just look at a document for 10 seconds. You do an examination of the document or handwriting, and then you give your expert opinion. Half of our money is made on the examination itself. The other half is made on the letter writing and the giving live testimony. So I’m not giving away half of my revenue just because they want me to look at something for free. Would you expect your dentist to examine your teeth for free? Would you expect your doctor to run blood test for free and you only pay if you don’t have terrible disease. Of course not.
I’ll just tell them: go pay for the exam. I’ll be happy to do the exam and give them a verbal opinion. Any good expert will do the same as I do, because nobody wants to work for free anymore.
It is really obvious what it is, and I just want you to take a minute. It never takes a minute. It takes a lot of time to do a proper examination.
Anybody that would look at a document and voice an opinion as an expert in a minute, you don’t want to hire. You cannot properly identify in a minute whether or not it’s authentic or a forgery, in almost all cases.
It takes a lot of experience to be able to have a quick judgment — or a good judgment, if it takes all day. And so if an inexperienced expert gives you an opinion that you want to spend money on, don’t do it. A good document examiner will not do it.
